The Technical Aspects of Running- Improving your Mechanics

This program is currently unavailable. Click here to view all of our current programs.

The Amherst Track and Field/Amherst Recreation Department is offering a running program for adults that will focus on improving running efficiency. If you run 5k races and occasional longer distances, you know how running can be a lot of work. But if you have never had any formal coaching or training, you likely do not know how to practice running or understand the technical aspects of the sport that will increase your efficiency and make your runs more enjoyable.

This 8 week program will emphasize developing the fundamental elements of running: proper biomechanics, strength, speed endurance, and range of motion. Each week there will be a classroom session to introduce and discuss the elements of running and a weekly technical run.

The initial technical running sessions will last for 90 minutes and involve 3-5 miles of running activity. As the program progresses we may do sessions as long as 2.5 hours of running activity, although it may not be continuous running.

1. The mechanics of running
2. Flexibility and range of motion
3. Strength training and plyometrics for running
4. Running form
5. Training program concepts
6. Interval training for speed endurance
7. Psychological elements of training and racing

The program will be presented by George Bower, who has more than 30 years of experience coaching at the youth, high school, collegiate and post-collegiate levels. The athletes he has coached have earned NCAA All-America honors 11 times and he coached Neil Wood to the US Olympic Trials in the marathon. He is in his 17th year with the Amherst Track and Field program.

Anyone who has questions about the program can email George at track@amhersttrack.org.

This program is limited to 16 adults.
